Sweden Secures Bronze in Ice Hockey World Championship with a Victory over Canada; Victor Hedman Expresses Pride, While John Tavares Reflects on Loss

Sweden defeats Canada to take home the bronze medal at the hockey world championships

On May 26, 2024, at 12:23 PM ET, Sweden secured a bronze medal in the ice hockey world championship with a 4-2 victory over Canada. Carl Grundstrom led the charge for Sweden, scoring two goals to secure their spot on the podium. His winning goal came with just over six minutes remaining in the final period at Prague Arena.

Despite losing to the Czech Republic the day before, Sweden’s Victor Hedman expressed pride in the team’s resilience. He noted that playing five games in seven days was challenging but losing one of those ten games was tougher still – and losing to the wrong team was even more disappointing.

Canada, who had won their first gold medal since 1987, fell short against Sweden and settled for fourth place. Dylan Cozens scored his tournament-leading ninth goal for Canada, while Pierre-Luc Dubois also found the net. Captain John Tavares reflected on what could have been – not winning gold – but emphasized how proud he felt representing Canada nonetheless. Despite their loss, Tavares commended his team’s effort and competitiveness throughout the tournament.

Both Canada and Sweden had impressive runs in the early stages of the tournament, winning their groups undefeated. However, they faltered in the semifinals – Canada losing out on a shootout win against Switzerland while Sweden suffered defeat at the hands of Czech Republic. Despite these setbacks, both teams showed their strength and determination in securing a top-four finish in this year’s world championship title match.
