Suncar Leads the Construction Industry in Electrification with Battery-Operated Machinery and All-Electric Boats

ETH graduates develop environmentally-friendly electrical construction equipment

The construction industry is undergoing a revolution with the advent of electric machinery, and Suncar, a Swiss company founded by ETH students, is at the forefront of this movement. With over 350 battery-electric vehicles and machines running on their technology worldwide, Suncar has successfully electrified construction machinery for customers around the globe.

One of their latest innovations is the world’s first battery-operated crawler crane, which has been well received in the industry. However, Switzerland lags behind in terms of diesel consumption in the construction sector, highlighting a need for more sustainable practices in the country.

Despite this challenge, Suncar continues to push forward with plans to expand their services to various new vehicles, including fire engines, snow groomers, and tar machines. The company started as an ETH focus project in 2010 and has since grown to a team of 50 people working on research and development. While they face challenges in finding experienced personnel, Suncar remains committed to innovation and driving the future of sustainable construction practices.

Recently, Suncar gained public attention for their contribution to an all-electric boat racing series, showcasing the versatility of their technology. As they continue to grow and expand their services, Suncar aims to lead the way in the electrification of construction machinery globally. Through dedication and innovation, they are driving a new era of sustainable construction practices that will benefit both the environment and society as a whole.
