Summit Leads to Historic Agreement on Peace Framework in Ukraine

The Conclusion of the Swiss Summit: Analysis of Ukraine’s final document

In a historic communiqué, around 80 of the 92 countries participating in the Buergenstock summit in central Switzerland have agreed on a framework for peace in Ukraine. The Charter of the United Nations, particularly its principles of respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, were identified as the foundation for achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the region.

The countries that signed the communiqué pledged to address three key aspects of the ongoing war: nuclear safety, food security, and prisoners, including deported Ukrainian children. They emphasized the importance of working towards a framework for global peace based on international law, specifically the United Nations Charter.

The summit participants reaffirmed their commitment to respecting the territorial integrity and political independence of all states, including Ukraine. They also highlighted the importance of settling disputes peacefully and refraining from threatening or using force in international relations.

Regarding nuclear safety, the countries agreed that Ukrainian nuclear facilities should operate safely under Ukrainian sovereign control and in accordance with IAEA principles. They condemned any threat or use of nuclear weapons in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.

Food security was identified as essential for global stability. The participants emphasized the importance of uninterrupted food production and supply while calling for free, safe commercial navigation and access to seaports in the region to ensure food safety and prevent disruptions in the food supply chain.

Finally, prisoner exchanges, repatriation of illegally deported Ukrainian children, and release of detained Ukrainian civilians were prioritized by summit participants. They stressed dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved in resolving this conflict to achieve lasting peace.

Concrete steps were agreed upon by these countries to address these issues and move towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
