Summer’s End: Addressing Teen Mental Health in Holyoke, MA

MiraVista and Public Health Institute Team Up to Launch Campaign Promoting Teen Mental Health

A campaign aimed at promoting teen mental health was launched on Tuesday in Holyoke, MA. Kimberely Lee with MiraVista Behavioral Health Center emphasized the importance of addressing adolescent mental health, stating that it does not take a break during the summer months. The campaign, which is in partnership with the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts, aims to raise awareness about teenage mental health and encourage open discussions about mental well-being.

Experts noted that while summer is typically a joyful time for many teens, it can also be challenging for those who may feel isolated and lonely. According to Lee, social disconnection during the summer can worsen existing mental health conditions and contribute to feelings of loneliness among teens. To support teenagers’ mental well-being, adults are encouraged to have open conversations about mental health and stay connected with community activities and volunteering opportunities.

Springfield City Councilor Lavar Click-Bruce highlighted the significance of providing summer programs and opportunities for local teens to stay active and engaged. He mentioned the YMCA on Main Street as a community center that offers a variety of activities for teens and families alike. Click-Bruce emphasized that parents should find activities that suit their child’s interests and needs to support their mental health and well-being.
