Subscriber Risk: Activision Bets on Xbox Game Pass for Call of Duty’s Latest Release

A new business model is the latest Call of Duty tactic

Activision, the company behind the popular war simulation series Call of Duty, is taking a gamble by linking its latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, with the subscription model of Xbox Game Pass. Instead of paying $70 for the game on its opening day, players will only need a monthly subscription to enjoy it. The gaming industry landscape is constantly changing and Activision and its parent company Microsoft are hoping that players who sign up for Game Pass to play the new Call of Duty game will continue their subscription beyond just finishing the game.

Last year’s Call of Duty game was not as successful as previous editions, prompting the decision to tie the new release to Xbox Game Pass. The intention is to keep gamers engaged with multiple games rather than just completing one title and moving on. Additionally, Microsoft, as the owner of Activision and Xbox Live service has recently shut down several other gaming studios it owns which has caused concern among fans of those games.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga believes that this shift represents a risk for Activision and Microsoft according to him “This shift towards a subscription model is a brave move by Activision and Microsoft but it also comes with a level of uncertainty”.
