Strengthening Healthcare Systems for Reducing Maternal and Newborn Mortality Worldwide: FIGO’s Strategic View

Enhancing healthcare systems to decrease maternal and infant mortality on a global scale

The International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) and the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (IJGO) have released a paper titled “Global Health Systems Strengthening: FIGO’s Strategic View on Reducing Maternal and Newborn Mortality Worldwide.” The paper, authored by the FIGO Committee on Health Systems Strengthening and Respectful Care, highlights the importance of strengthening healthcare systems to achieve universal healthcare coverage and decrease maternal and newborn mortality rates globally.

Despite significant progress made in reducing maternal and newborn mortality over the past two decades, disparities persist, especially in low-income countries and marginalized populations within high-income countries. To address this issue, the paper advocates for a more comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to maternal deaths to inform effective policy and health program decisions worldwide.

FIGO is committed to promoting health equity for women, girls, and newborns globally. The organization is dedicated to improving maternal and perinatal outcomes, reducing healthcare disparities, advancing research, education, advocacy, and capacity-building in obstetrics and gynecology. Health systems strengthening involves enhancing various aspects of the healthcare system, such as service delivery, workforce development
