Steward Health System Faces Financial Crisis, Department of Public Health Implements Monitors in Hospitals

Massachusetts initiates emergency operations plan to collaborate with Steward-owned hospitals

Massachusetts is currently facing a crisis as the Steward health system, which operates nine hospitals in the state, struggles with significant debt. In response to this financial challenge, the Department of Public Health has placed monitors in the hospitals since January.

To address these issues, Governor Maura Healey has emphasized the importance of ensuring quality care for patients during any potential transitions. The emergency operations plan includes an incident command center that aims to improve communication among state officials, healthcare providers, and investors.

Healey has been advocating for Steward to exit Massachusetts after selling its physician network to Optum Care is currently under review by the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission. Despite the financial challenges, all nine hospitals owned by Steward in Massachusetts remain open and operational.
