Steelers Cut Backup Defensive Back Trenton Thompson Amid Rising Injury Concerns and Drafting of Safety Ryan Watts

Steelers release defensive back Trenton Thompson

The Steelers announced on Wednesday that they had cut backup defensive back Trenton Thompson from the team. Thompson, 26, had joined the Steelers during their 2023 training camp and spent time on both the practice squad and active roster before being placed on injured reserve in January. In the previous season, Thompson appeared in six games with one start, playing 212 defensive snaps and 58 on special teams. He recorded a total of 22 tackles and one interception.

It is believed that the drafting of safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round may have played a role in Thompson’s departure from the team. The Steelers also announced the release of wide receiver Denzel Mims, which had been previously reported.

Thompson’s time with the Steelers was marked by his versatility as he moved between different roles throughout his tenure with the team. However, his injury history may have hindered his progress and ultimately led to his release from the team.
