Steelers Cut Backup Defensive Back and Wide Receiver as they Tighten Roster for Upcoming Season

Trenton Thompson released by Steelers

On Wednesday, the Steelers made some roster moves, cutting backup defensive back Trenton Thompson and wide receiver Denzel Mims. Thompson, 26, had struggled to secure a consistent spot on the active roster since joining the team during the 2023 training camp. He had briefly been placed on injured reserve on Jan. 10 after bouncing between the practice squad and active roster throughout the season.

During his time with the Steelers, Thompson appeared in six games with one start, accumulating 22 tackles and an interception. However, his release may have been influenced by the team’s decision to draft safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round, adding depth to the defensive backfield.

In addition to Thompson’s departure, Mims was also released by the team. Mims had been acquired in a previous move and was now part of the team’s efforts to reassess and adjust their roster before the upcoming season. The Steelers are continuing their evaluation of their players and making necessary changes to ensure they have a competitive roster for next year’s season.
