Koa Peat, from Gilbert Perry High School, chosen to lead USA U17 World Cup team

Gilbert Perry standout forward Koa Peat has been selected to represent USA Basketball at the U17 World Cup this summer, as announced by the team on Wednesday. Peat, who is one of the top five prospects in the 2025 class, has previously won gold medals at the U16 Americas in 2023 and the U17 World Cup in 2022. In addition, he was named USA Basketball’s Male Player of the Year in 2023 for his impressive stats and performance.

Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 235 pounds, Peat has achieved Open Division championships in each of his three seasons at Perry. He has played alongside Cody Williams, a potential lottery pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, for the first two seasons. Peat was also honored as the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year in the last two years. Recently, he narrowed down his college choices to ten schools including Arizona State and Arizona.

Peat will be reuniting with players he competed with on the U16 team last summer, including Cameron and Cayden Boozer, AJ Dybantsa, and Tyran Stokes. The team boasts an all-time record of 44-0 at the U17 World Cup. Some notable names who didn’t make it onto the final roster cut include Goodyear Millennium wing Cameron Holmes and Bryce James, son of LeBron James and younger brother of Bronny. Despite a talented pool of initial participants that included NBA legacy players, Peat will lead a promising group of young athletes that is set for success at this year’s tournament.
