Standout Athletes Recognized in Iowa High School Sports Awards – Weisskopf Named Boys Athlete of the Year, Sellers Takes Home Girls Award

Athletes of the Year honored at Iowa High School Sports Awards

The Iowa High School Sports Awards presented by SCHEELS recognized over 250 student-athletes in Des Moines, including Derek Weisskopf from Williamsburg and Jaidyn Sellers from Panorama as the Boys and Girls Athlete of the Year respectively.

Weisskopf was a standout athlete in football, earning numerous accolades such as being named an ADIDAS All-American, Class 3A All-State Captain, District MVP, and invitations to the Shrine Bowl and Des Moines Register Elite Team. He also excelled in basketball and track and field, earning all-conference honors, honorable mention all-state, a silver medal in high jump, shot put, and discus. Weisskopf will be playing football for Iowa next year as a four-star recruit.

On the other hand, Sellers showcased her skills across a variety of sports during her high school career. As the fastest sprinter in the state, she claimed the Class 1A state titles in the 100, 200, and 400 events, as well as placing third in the high jump. She accumulated a total of 10 state titles and three Drake Relay Titles throughout her career. In basketball, Sellers was named to the Class 2A first team by the Des Moines Register and led her team to a state championship. She will continue her athletic career in college as a softball outfielder for Iowa.
