Squash Stars Shine: Makin and Kennedy Make Semi-Finals at British Open

Makin Advances to British Open Semifinals After Defeating Elias

In the British Open, Joel Makin made history as the first Welshman to reach the semi-finals since 2000 when David Evans won the title. The 29-year-old squash player secured a remarkable victory over world champion Diego Elias in the quarter-finals held at the Birmingham Rep Theatre. Makin’s impressive performance resulted in an 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 win, marking one of his best showings on the squash court.

Makin expressed his belief in his abilities and strategy against Elias despite acknowledging Elias’ exceptional skills. He was confident in his game plan and performance on the court. This victory was especially significant for Makin, who had not previously recorded a single win at the British Open despite participating since 2017. His success not only secured him a spot in the semi-finals but also ended Wales’ long wait for a men’s semi-finalist since David Evans’s victory 24 years ago.

Fresh off his recent triumph at the Manchester Open, Makin now prepares to face world number one Ali Farag of Egypt in the semi-finals. His perseverance and success despite facing challenges this year showcase his determination and talent on the professional squash circuit. As Makin gears up for the next stage of the tournament, he remains focused on his goal of competing for the prestigious title.

In women’s division, Georgina Kennedy is set to play her quarter-final match against world champion Nouran Gohar while Hania El Hammamy faces Tinne Gilis in remaining quarter-final matchup. Nour El Sherbini and Nour El Tayeb have already secured their spots in semi finals which sets up intense competition in upcoming rounds of tournament. Additional quarter final matches feature players from Egypt, United States, Malaysia and New Zealand which highlights international competitiveness of tournament.
