Hayden Springer had an outstanding performance at the John Deere Classic on Thursday, shooting a 12-under 59 in the opening round. It was just the 14th time a sub-60 round had been achieved on the PGA Tour, tying Paul Goydos’ record of 59 from 2010.
Springer’s exceptional play began with a front-nine score of 27, which matched the tournament’s lowest nine-hole score. He then finished off his impressive round with a back nine of 32 to end up with a total of 59 for the day. This remarkable feat came just three weeks after Cameron Young achieved a similar feat by breaking 60 in the second round at the Travelers Championship in June.
After sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to secure his 59, Springer reflected on his performance. He said that shooting such a low score felt like a possibility after his impressive front-nine play. Despite missing out on qualifying for several tournaments in recent years, Springer showed significant improvement in his game and managed to deliver a stunning opening round at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
