On May 13, 2024, parents and caregivers dropped off their 5th grade students on Nawakwa Road at their assigned cabins in Biglerville. Despite the rainy morning, the day’s agenda proceeded as planned. The campers would be staying at Nawakwa for the rest of the school week to participate in the Science curriculum.
The annual spring field trip lasts for 3 days and 2 nights, during which teachers facilitate activity-oriented science learning. They focus on fostering respect for all living things, building an understanding of ecosystems, and instilling a sense of responsibility in caring for the environment. The experience also ties into American History Studies by demonstrating how pioneers survived in the past. Students engage in various activities like knot tying, leaf art, recycled crafts, stream studies, and campfire songs, all while staying in cabins on-site.
High school students from Biglerville volunteer as camp counselors, while members of the Biglerville and Arendtsville Lions Club help with cooking and serving meals. This environmental educational experience is made possible through grants and scholarships from the community.
