Spice Scare: Health Alert Issued for Two Badia Spices Products Sold in NYC

Recently, the Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball issued a health alert due to elevated levels of lead found in two Badia Spices products sold in New York State. The ground ginger and cinnamon tested above the 1-part per million action level for lead in spices, which can pose health risks.

The ground ginger is sold in 1.5-ounce clear plastic bottles with black plastic caps, with UPC Code #033844002237 and Lot #307922. The cinnamon is sold in 2-ounce clear plastic bottles with black plastic caps, with UPC Code #033844000158 and Lot #’s 305481 and 309528. Both products were manufactured by Badia Spices Inc., located in Doral, Florida, and were sold at various retailers across New York State.

Exposure to lead can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health issues. While no illnesses have been reported yet, consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them and discard them immediately. Those concerned about potential health issues should seek medical attention from a healthcare provider.
