Spain’s Political Climate: Sánchez Responds to Corruption Allegations while Right-Wing Organizations Drive Investigations

Wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez under investigation

The regional court of the autonomous region of Madrid has ruled in favor of an investigation against Begoña Gómez, the wife of Sánchez, on suspicion of influence peddling and corruption in the economy. Despite corruption charges being brought against his wife, Sánchez denied the allegations and accused his political opponents of engaging in a smear campaign. He even went as far as to threaten resignation from his office, which he has held since mid-2018.

Facing pressure from the right and extreme right, who he claimed were using all means to harass him, Sánchez took a five-day period of reflection during which he cancelled all public appointments. Ultimately, he decided to remain in office. The complaint against Gómez was filed in April by the organization “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands), a private group that has been supporting right-wing causes in Spain for years. They accused Gómez of helping to obtain public contracts through the abuse of her position, although investigations by both the public prosecutor’s office and the police unit responsible for corruption crimes did not find any evidence of illegal actions by Gómez.
