South Jordan’s Recycling Program: A Pioneering Step Towards Sustainable Water Future in Utah

As the population of Utah continues to grow, efforts are being made to address water sustainability. In South Jordan, a program has been implemented at the reclamation treatment plant to recycle and purify water. This is the first program of its kind in Utah and the nation, showcasing the innovation and progress being made in water conservation.

The technology employed in South Jordan’s water recycling program transforms indoor wastewater into safe drinking water. Normally, treated water from the reclamation center in Riverton is discharged into the Jordan River. However, with this new program, the water will undergo extensive filtering and testing before being distributed to the public over the next five years.

Nathan Lundstad, Director of Drinking Water, praises the quality of water produced by this program, stating that it rivals some of the best water in the state. The program not only provides South Jordan with an additional water source but also sets a precedent for other cities in Utah facing similar issues. With increasing demand for water resources and looming threats of drought, initiatives like this one are essential for ensuring reliable and sustainable water sources for future generations.

Interest in this innovative technology is spreading across Utah, from Washington County to Salt Lake City’s Wasatch Front. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality emphasizes responsible use of our limited resources and encourages cities to invest in sustainable solutions like those implemented in South Jordan. By working together towards more secure and sustainable futures for all residents, we can ensure a better tomorrow for everyone involved.

Overall, South Jordan’s new recycling program is a positive step towards securing a more sustainable future for all residents of Utah as well as other cities facing similar challenges.
