South Africa’s Triumph: 2009 Men’s T20 World Cup Victory Against India in Group E

Taking a closer look at the past encounters in the T20 World Cup between India and South Africa

In 2009, South Africa emerged victorious in a Group E contest against India in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Nottingham. The Proteas were able to avenge a previous loss to India in the tournament.

Both teams had entered the second round of the tournament undefeated, but India faced a setback as they suffered losses in all three matches at this stage. This meant that India did not progress to the Semi-Finals as South Africa did.

South Africa set a target of 131 runs in challenging conditions, thanks to a standout performance from AB de Villiers, who scored 63 runs off 51 balls. India’s bowlers Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, and Ravindra Jadeja each managed to pick up a wicket.

In their defense of the target, South Africa’s bowlers Johan Botha and Dale Steyn shone, preventing the Indian batters from finding their form. Botha took three wickets while Steyn contributed with 2 for 25, ultimately securing a 12-run victory for South Africa.
