The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued a recall to warn residents about the dangers of using fake eclipse glasses. Proper safety glasses should carry the ISO designation of 12312-2, but the recalled glasses sold through Amazon were labeled as “EN ISO 12312-1:2022.” These glasses were sold in various Southern Illinois retailers such as Farm Fresh Market (Breese, IL), Highland Tru Buy (Highland, IL), Perry County Marketplace (Pinckneyville, IL), Sinclair Foods (Jerseyville, IL), Steelville Marketplace (Steelville, IL), and Big John Grocery (Metropolis, IL).
Many of these stores have posted warnings on social media to alert customers about the recall. For example, Farm Fresh Market in Breese, Illinois posted on Facebook warning customers of the recall and advising them on how to return the glasses. Similarly, Steelville Marketplace posted a notice informing customers of the recall and offering a full refund for the glasses purchased at their store.
It is important for residents to be vigilant and check the safety of their eclipse glasses to avoid any potential harm. Proper safety glasses should have an ISO designation of 12312-2 and should be certified by relevant authorities. If you suspect that your eclipse glasses are counterfeit or unsafe, do not use them during the upcoming solar eclipse and seek out proper safety gear instead.
