Last week, the Welsh government made the decision to dismiss Hannan Blythyn from her position as minister for social partnership. Vaughan Gething, the Health Minister, cited leaked text messages as the reason for Blythyn’s removal. Despite Blythyn’s strong denial of the allegations, another member of the government, Eluned Morgan, expressed support for the sacking. Morgan cited evidence that the messages could be traced back to Blythyn’s phone.
Blythyn took to social media last week to express shock and sadness over the events. She vehemently denied any involvement in leaking information and emphasized the importance of integrity in politics. However, on BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, Morgan emphasized the need for trust within the cabinet and expressed her support for Gething’s decision based on the evidence presented. While she did not disclose specifics of the evidence, she stated that it was sufficient proof to trace back any leak to Blythyn’s phone.
Morgan noted that while this setback is disappointing, it highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and trust within government roles. The first minister has indicated a path for Blythyn to potentially return from this setback in future.
