Snapchat has recently introduced new tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to create augmented reality (AR) experiences and transform images in real time. These new tools, set to launch on mobile devices in the near future, are designed to empower users to express themselves through the Lens Studio and GenAI Suite.
At the Augmented World Expo in California on June 18, co-founder and CTO Bobby Murphy demonstrated how these tools work. The company’s teams have been working on accelerating machine learning models to make them faster and more impactful on AR. As a result, they have developed generative AI tools for the mobile app that allow users to create personalized AR effects.
For example, users can describe a specific type of lens, such as a 50s sci-fi film, and the tool will transform the subject in front of the camera into the desired theme. These generative AI techniques also power other Snapchat functionalities like Dreams, Bitmoji Backgrounds, Chat Wallpapers, and AI Pets. The platform is also incorporating this technology into the Lens Studio, allowing creators to generate personalized machine learning models for their lenses.
The latest Lens Studio 5.0 version has been developed from scratch to improve productivity, modularity, and speed for creators and developers. With these new innovations, Snapchat aims to unlock new dimensions of creativity for all users.
