Slovenian Traffic Jams and Public Appeal: The First Time the DARS Called on Government Employees to Work from Home

This Marks the First Time Slovenians Have Made an Unusual Request Amid May’s Tourism Surge to Croatia

On Friday, the Slovenian state highway management company, DARS, issued a public appeal to the Ministry of Public Administration. The company urged government employees to work from home as much as possible during May in order to alleviate traffic congestion on Slovenian roads, particularly during the May Day holidays. This was the first time DARS had made such an appeal.

DARS warned the ministry that traffic jams were expected to increase on Slovenian roads during the May Day holidays, with both tourists and daily commuters traveling. They emphasized that the appeal was aimed at reducing traffic in Ljubljana, where congestion is typically at its worst. Based on past experiences, DARS believed that having public administration employees work from home would improve traffic flow in the city.

The Ministry provided DARS with dates when road conditions were expected to be at their worst. However, according to unofficial information, the ministry did not plan to follow DARS’ recommendations. Police departments in areas like Koper also issued warnings about increased traffic during the holiday period.
