In the first half of their EURO 2024 clash, Slovakia made history when Ivan Schranz scored a goal after another defensive mishap from Ukraine. This goal marked an unwanted record for Ukraine, as they have struggled to keep clean sheets in the competition. Schranz took advantage of a quick throw and cross that caught Ukraine’s defense off guard. Oleksandr Zinchenko was caught out of position at the back post, allowing Schranz to score with a header past Anatoliy Trubin.
This goal was the second for the 30-year-old, making him the only Slovakian to score more than one goal for the country in a single European Championship. He is currently tied as the top scorer with Germany’s Jamal Musiala. On the other hand, Ukraine’s decision to drop Andriy Lunin after a poor performance against Romania did not have the desired impact as Trubin struggled to keep a clean sheet.
With Ukraine trailing, they must fight back to keep their hopes alive in the competition. The outcome of this match will shape the future of both teams in EURO 2024. Will Slovakia secure a spot in the round of 16 with a game to spare or can Ukraine make a comeback?
