Silent and Dangerous: The Importance of Early Detection and Treatment for Hepatitis C in Vietnam

Hepatitis C is a disease that can cause significant damage to the liver, but often does not present with any noticeable symptoms. With no vaccine to prevent it, early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer. While oral medication is now the preferred treatment method for hepatitis C, in the past, treatment was expensive and required injections. Today, advances in medical technology have made oral medication more accessible and affordable, making it easier for patients to receive care.

The Ministry of Health estimates that there are over 900,000 cases of hepatitis C in Vietnam, but many people with the disease remain undiagnosed because they do not experience typical symptoms. This lack of awareness can lead to further spread of the disease within the community. It’s essential that individuals take preventive measures such as getting tested regularly and practicing safe sex to reduce their risk of contracting hepatitis C.

Transmission routes for hepatitis C include blood contact, sexual contact, and mother-to-child transmission. People who have undergone blood transfusions or use injection drugs are at increased risk of contracting the disease. Sex workers are also at higher risk due to their profession. By following these preventive measures and seeking medical attention when needed, individuals can protect themselves and others from the devastating effects of hepatitis C.

The Ministry of Health has a plan to reduce the burden of hepatitis C by increasing screening options and providing more affordable treatments for patients. Education and awareness campaigns play a vital role in preventing and treating this disease as demonstrated by other countries like Japan and Taiwan.

It’s recommended that individuals proactively get tested for hepatitis C if they engage in high-risk behaviors or come into close contact with infected individuals. Early detection and treatment can help prevent complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer.

In conclusion, hepatitis C is a disease that can be cured but requires early detection and treatment to prevent severe complications. Preventive measures such as practicing safe sex, avoiding sharing personal hygiene items, getting tested regularly should be followed along with seeking medical attention when needed to protect oneself from this deadly disease.
