In Milan, Italy, 13 Penitentiary Police officers were arrested on Monday for allegations of abuse, torture, and attempted rape against young inmates at the ‘Cesare Beccaria’ center. Additionally, eight agents have been suspended as the investigation continues.
Based on reports from the guarantor of detainees in 2022, the investigation used footage from cameras at the center to gather evidence of violence against minors. The officers are facing charges of injuries, complicity in crimes against minors, and attempted sexual violence.
The General Secretary of UILPA Penitentiary Police union, Gennarino De Fazio, expressed shock and disbelief at the allegations. He called for immediate reforms and a prison decree to address systemic issues that may lead to violence and atrocities within prisons. De Fazio also highlighted the high incidence of suicides among inmates and agents in Italian prisons, emphasizing the urgent need for change within the system.
