Shock and Violence: Marie Kollenrott, a Green Politician Attacked during Campaign Event in Göttingen.

Green politician in Göttingen targeted during European election campaign

On Saturday afternoon, Marie Kollenrott, a member of the Göttingen state parliament for the Alliance 90/The Greens party, was attacked by a man in downtown Göttingen. The incident occurred during an election campaign event in the busy pedestrian zone near the Old Town Hall. Kollenrott suffered minor injuries to her arms in the attack and was rushed to the hospital.

According to police, the man had previously spoken disparagingly about the party at the campaign stand “The Green.” A short political discussion with the victim developed, during which the man suddenly approached Kollenrott and hit her several times on the upper body before walking away. Fortunately, several people intervened when Kollenrott was attacked, preventing the situation from escalating even further.

Kollenrott has been a member of the state parliament since 2021, serving on the Committee on Environment, Energy, Construction, and Climate Protection. She spoke with Göttinger Tageblatt after being released from hospital and said that she had scratches and a red arm and was still in shock from what happened. The attack serves as a reminder of the risks that politicians face in carrying out their duties.
