Orelvis Martinez, a Toronto Blue Jays infielder, has been suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball (MLB) just two days after making his Major League debut. The 22-year-old Dominican tested positive for clomiphene, a banned performance-enhancing drug on the MLB’s list.
Despite his intentions, Martinez acknowledged his mistake and accepted his suspension. He explained that he was prescribed Rejun 50, which contains clomiphene, by a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic as he and his girlfriend have been trying to start a family since 2020.
The Blue Jays signed Martinez in 2018 for $3.5 million and had high hopes for him as one of the top power-hitting prospects in the minor leagues. However, executive vice president and general manager Ross Atkins expressed surprise and disappointment over Martinez’s suspension, promising to support him through the ordeal and help him learn from his mistake.
Martinez will be eligible to return to the team in September. The Blue Jays currently sit in last place in the American League East division with a record of 35 wins and 41 losses.
