Senators Speak Out Against Constitutional Bill: Risks to Democracy and Balance of Power

Reforms Spark Change as Female Senators Stand up for Life: “I Refuse to Stay Silent”

In the Senate Chamber, two senators for life, Liliana Segre and Elena Cattaneo, have expressed their reservations about the Constitutional bill proposed by the government. The bill outlines various alarming aspects that they believe are cause for scrutiny.

Segre emphasizes the need to restore strength, dignity, and autonomy to a weakened Parliament. She questions the implications of the reform on the democratic balance of power between branches of government. She is particularly concerned about the downgrading of the President of the Republic as a significant cause for alarm.

Cattaneo points out the current imbalance in the functioning of Parliament, where legislative power is often circumvented by decisions made elsewhere. She calls for a dialogue to find a common path forward that ensures the strengthening of the executive while safeguarding the autonomy and effectiveness of the parliamentary function.

Both senators caution against potential plebiscitarian drift that could be caused by Constitutional amendments. They express concerns about concentrating power in the hands of the Prime Minister and stresses maintaining checks and balances in a constitutional democracy.
