Scotland’s Euro Disappointment: Failed to Score on Target, Conceded Five Goals in a Match and Had a Player Sent Off

Key Stats from Germany’s Dominant 5-1 Victory over Scotland

In the Euros, Scotland’s performance was disappointing as they failed to have a shot on target since 1992 against the Netherlands. Their only goal was an own goal by Antonio Rüdiger. This defeat marked Scotland’s heaviest loss in a major international tournament since their 7-0 loss to Uruguay in 1954.

Scotland conceded five goals in a match for the first time since 2012 when they lost 5-1 to the United States. This happened during their Euro match against Germany, where they lost 3-1. The last time they had conceded five goals in a competitive match was in a 6-0 loss to the Netherlands in a Euro qualifier back in 2003.

The match also saw Scotland’s centre-half Ryan Porteous being sent off, making him the second Scottish player to be sent off at a major tournament after Craig Burley in the 1998 World Cup against Morocco. This incident marked the first sending off in the opening game of the Euros since 2012 when both Sokratis and Wojciech Szczesny were sent off in the 1-1 draw between Poland and Greece.
