Science, Common Sense, and Public Opinion Support the Idea of a Nanny State for Smoking Restrictions

The idea of a “nanny state” is gaining support from science, common sense, and public opinion as smoking restriction becomes more popular. While libertarians may argue against such measures, the evidence in favor of them is clear. Compulsory seat belts in cars and helmets for motorcyclists have been proven to have a positive impact, and it is likely that similar measures will be taken to restrict smoking.

In the UK alone, an estimated 76,000 deaths each year are attributed to smoking. Richard Doll, an Oxford epidemiologist who made this connection in 1950, was able to establish a definitive link between smoking and cancer despite efforts by tobacco companies to hide the truth. No reputable scientist has been able to refute his findings since then.

It’s also important to note that two out of three people who fail to quit smoking will die prematurely. Smoking is responsible for a vast majority of cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which places a significant strain on the already stressed National Health Service (NHS) and costs billions annually. Therefore, it’s clear that taking action to restrict smoking would be beneficial not only for individual health but also for the larger society.
