Science 2035: Equipping Australia for a Decarbonized and Diversified Future through Scientific Resilience and Capability

Forming a science infrastructure to bolster our country’s goals

The Australian Academy of Science has recently launched a ten-year plan titled ‘Australian Science, Australia’s Future: Science 2035,’ to showcase the evolving role of science in meeting national goals and advancing Australian interests. This initiative will evaluate the capabilities of Australia’s science system in terms of competition, collaboration, and contributions to the economy, security, health, and quality of life.

President Professor Chennupati Jagadish highlighted the nation’s aspirations for a decarbonized and diversified economy, strengthened defense capabilities, and enhanced sovereign capability. He emphasized the need for a resilient and responsive science system to support these ambitions effectively.

To achieve this goal, the upcoming initiative aims to provide decision-makers with evidence to identify capability gaps and allocate resources strategically. Experts from the Fellowship and beyond will be engaged in research and innovation sectors to inform this project throughout 2024. The Advisory Group members for this project include a diverse group of experts from various fields.

‘Australian Science, Australia’s Future: Science 2035’ seeks to equip decision-makers with the information needed to ensure that Australia’s science system is well-structured to support national ambitions effectively. This initiative will be delivered in early 2025 as an independent report by the Academy.
