School District Approves Zero Salary Increase, Sparking Concerns among Employees

Socorro school district decides against pay raise and cuts health benefits for employees

The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees recently convened for a budget meeting to discuss decisions for the upcoming school year. Although the district faces a significant deficit, the board voted unanimously to adopt a zero percent salary increase and no retention payments for employees in the district for 2024-2025. This decision has sparked concerns among some employees who feel like they are taking a pay cut, as the district plans to save money by cutting benefits and compensation.

The board also approved a $20 reduction in employee health care contributions per month, which was recommended by Texas Education Agency conservators appointed to help reduce the deficit. The board recognizes the importance of addressing financial issues now to prevent future problems.

Despite expecting this outcome, some employees such as bus driver Tommy Hill were disappointed with the decision. Hill acknowledged that it was necessary but expressed concern about the impact on employee compensation and benefits. Many within the district share this concern as they monitor budget adjustments closely.

The finalized budget for 2024-2025 is set to be adopted on June 19. The board is working diligently to address financial challenges and make necessary changes to ensure long-term financial stability in the district. Community members and employees remain attentive as decisions are made regarding navigating the budget shortfall.
