Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center and Perch Restaurant: How Two Sioux Falls Businesses are Thriving in a Changing Industry

Perch restaurant opening in historic building marks new chapter for one of city’s oldest businesses

Sioux Falls.Business recently reported on a discussion with Jodi Schwan about the future of Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center and a new breakfast and lunch spot emerging in a former neighborhood grocery building. Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center, one of the oldest businesses in Sioux Falls dating back to 1888, has transitioned to being part of Builders FirstSource, a large industry leader with nearly 600 locations.

This move allows Schoeneman’s to access a wider range of materials and technology to meet the increasing demand for housing in the future. Despite the change in ownership, the name Schoeneman’s will remain, and current employee-owners will benefit from the sale financially. This transition ensures that the business remains strong and ready to adapt to the changing needs of the industry.

In other news, a historic former grocery store at 9th and Grange is being transformed into Perch, a new restaurant that will primarily serve breakfast and lunch daily. The owner of the building, attorney Alex Halbach, has already moved his law firm into the second floor, with Perch set to open its doors in the coming weeks. Perch will have limited indoor seating for 26 but will also feature a patio with 50 seats, and a future rooftop patio with an additional 40 seats. The restaurant is expected to be a cozy spot for locals to enjoy delicious meals in a comfortable setting.
