Scandalous Corruption Investigation at Venezuela’s State Oil Company Leads to Prison for Former Officials: A Tragic Turn of Events

Venezuela’s former oil minister, Tareck El Aissami, and ex-economy minister Simon Zerpa are among over 50 individuals arrested for their involvement in a corruption plot within the state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Colonel Venezuelan Marino Lugo, who was also detained in relation to the investigation, was found dead in his cell on Wednesday. The Public Ministry has reported that preliminary evidence suggests he may have taken his own life through hanging. An autopsy has been conducted but the results have not yet been disclosed.

President Nicolas Maduro announced new arrests related to the corruption network at a press conference but did not reveal the number of people detained or their identities. Attorney General Tarek William Saab also remained tight-lipped during a media appearance. This case marks the third time that arrests have been halted due to deaths – one by suicide and another due to a pre-existing illness.

The PDVSA-Cripto case involves allegations of appropriation of public assets, money laundering, and association.
