Satellite Messaging: Apple’s Secret Source of Profit in the Future?

Apple iOS 18 Messaging Could Generate Revenue Through Satellite Services

Apple’s new iOS 18 software includes a feature called Messages via satellite, which will allow for sending and receiving messages, emojis, tap-backs, and SMS messaging all with end-to-end encryption. This feature reduces the reliance on Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity and expands an emergency messaging feature first introduced with iPhone 14. While the emergency service is currently free, it could potentially become a source of profit for Apple as it grows its services business.

The emergency messaging feature has been extended to include a non-emergency version called Messages via satellite. This new service allows users to connect to satellites hundreds of miles above the Earth to message friends and family when they are off the grid. The various messaging features supported by Messages via satellite include emojis, tap-backs, and SMS messaging. While the emergency service is currently free, the non-emergency version could potentially become a source of profits for Apple as it expands its services business to offset declining iPhone sales.

Messages via satellite may encourage owners of older iPhone models to upgrade and could be even more financially lucrative for the company if it decides to charge for the service in the future. This new feature could make iPhone 14 and later models less dependent on Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity and potentially reduce Apple’s reliance on iPhone sales.
