San Antonio’s Mental Health Outreach Efforts: S-A CORE and Its Continued Success

New mental health program implemented by local safety team reduces number of arrests

San Antonio’s Public Safety Committee met today to discuss updates on the city’s mental health outreach efforts. The initiative, known as S-A CORE, has been making significant progress in better serving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. One positive outcome has been a decrease in arrests related to mental health issues.

During the presentation, a map was shown highlighting areas in the city with the highest frequency of mental health crisis calls. Since its start in January, S-A CORE has established three teams to cover the city more comprehensively. Starting next month, the program will be available 24/7 to provide timely responses to mental health crises. This expansion will help ensure that individuals in need receive the support they require when facing a mental health emergency.

The program aims to connect people experiencing a mental health crisis with resources and support services, rather than relying solely on law enforcement intervention. By doing so, it not only improves outcomes for those in need but also reduces the burden on the criminal justice system and frees up resources for other pressing issues facing the community. The program has already seen success in reducing arrests related to mental health issues and increasing access to care for those in need. With its continued expansion, S-A CORE is poised to become an even more effective tool for addressing mental health crises in San Antonio.
