San Antonio’s Healthy Corner Stores Program: Improving Access to Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for a Healthier Community

Where to find fresh produce as National Public Health Week kicks off next Monday

In San Antonio, the focus during National Public Health Week is on improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This is evident in the launch of the Healthy Corner Stores program by the Metropolitan Health District in 2019, which provides healthier options at more affordable prices in areas considered food deserts.

The program identifies locations within half a mile to a mile from an H-E-B using information from the USDA. Currently, 45 stores in San Antonio are part of the program and accept SNAP benefits, with plans to add five more stores by 2025. One such participating store is Royal Blue Grocery in downtown San Antonio, which offers a variety of fruits and is looking to expand their options through the program.

This emphasis on promoting health and access to nutritious foods continues to grow in the city as it recognizes the importance of healthy eating habits for overall well-being.
