Sailing Towards Sustainability: The Launch of the World’s Largest Sailing Ship

largest sailing ship in the world

The Norwegian engineering company Brunvoll and the French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique are set to launch a new era in sustainable maritime travel with the construction of the Orient Express Silenseas. This upcoming vessel will be the world’s largest sailing ship, boasting an impressive length of 220 meters and towering masts reaching over 100 meters high. The ship will feature three masts with a sail area of 1,500 square meters, making it an unrivaled force in oceanic exploration.

Powered by a dual-fuel engine from Wärtsilä, the Silenseas will utilize both liquefied natural gas and hydrogen for more sustainable operations. Brunvoll will provide the propulsion system for the vessels, featuring a dual propeller configuration with adjustable pitch to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. The propeller will be powered by a direct drive electric motor, with Brunvoll also supplying the Thrust-OD gearbox to control the pitch of the propeller blades.

With an expected launch date of 2026, this project represents a significant step towards environmental-friendly practices in the maritime sector. The project manager Yann Penduff emphasized that promoting sustainable operations is crucial in reducing carbon emissions, making this new vessel a promising development for those seeking eco-friendly travel options.
