Safety First: Woodcraft of Tulsa Manager Advocates for Table Saw Safety Feature Amid Manufacturer Debate

Government Considers Requiring Quick Stop Technology on Table Saws

Matt Baxter, assistant manager at Woodcraft of Tulsa, recognizes the dangers associated with table saws and always takes precautions while using them. Despite the availability of safety technology, such as SawStop’s safety feature that stops the blade from spinning if it detects contact with skin, table saw manufacturers are not currently required to use it. However, some manufacturers oppose this rule, arguing that it will increase the price of table saws for consumers. Laura Kane, manager at Woodcraft of Tulsa, has seen many people come in with missing fingers due to table saw accidents and believes that the cost of implementing this safety feature is worth it compared to the potential medical bills and consequences of a serious injury. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted to proceed with a mandate that would require all table saws sold in the United States to have safety brakes. Kane hopes that once this technology becomes more widespread, it will lead to fewer injuries and a safer working environment for woodworkers and other professionals who use these tools.
