Russian Prosecutors Crack Down on Critics of Military History: Eidelman, Troyanova and Monetochka Charged

Tamara Eidelman’s video lessons criticized for promoting Nazism rehabilitation

The Moscow prosecutor’s office recently conducted an investigation into several individuals who made statements that disrespected Russia’s military glory, the Fatherland’s defense date and insulted the memory of those who fought for it. As a result of this investigation, Tamara Eidelman has been charged with making statements that showed a lack of respect for Russia’s military history and the date associated with its defense.

Eidelman’s statements were identified during network monitoring of her program on her YouTube channel “History Lessons with Tamara Eidelman.” It is unclear what specific remarks led to her charges. However, based on the evidence gathered by investigators, a decision will be made on whether to launch a criminal case under Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code, which deals with rehabilitation of Nazism.

In addition to Eidelman, actress Yana Troyanova has also been charged with inciting hatred under Clause “a” of Part 2 of Article 282 of the Criminal Code. This charge stems from an interview she gave to Novaya Gazeta Europe in which she said that Russians “deserve” calls to kill Russians because of the war in Ukraine.

Singer Monetochka (Elizaveta Gyrdymova) has also been accused of evading obligations under Part 2 of Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code after being declared a “foreign agent” by the Russian Ministry of Justice earlier this year. She was designated as such in January 2023 along with actress Yana Troyanova and historian Tamara Eidelman in September 2022.

It is important to note that these charges are serious and can carry significant consequences if found guilty. The Russian government has become increasingly crackdown on those who speak out against its policies and actions, often labeling them as “foreign agents” or accusing them of inciting hatred or other crimes. As such, it is important to carefully consider any statements or actions that could lead to such charges and seek legal counsel if necessary.
