Russian Foreign Ministry Engages with Hamas despite Controversial Reputation; Meanwhile, Articles on Cash Home Transactions Dominate Headlines

Hamas Politburo’s Deputy Head Returns to Moscow for Further Negotiations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met with Hamas leaders multiple times, and the Russian government maintains regular contacts with their leadership at the level of the Foreign Ministry. This was announced by RIA Novosti on Monday, June 24, when it was reported that Deputy head of the Hamas Politburo, Musa Abu Marzuk, would be arriving in Moscow for negotiations.

Abu Marzuk has planned meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. The Russian government does not consider Hamas or Islamic Jihad as terrorist organizations and maintains regular contacts with their leadership at the level of the Russian Foreign Ministry. This is a significant development as it shows Russia’s willingness to engage with Hamas despite its controversial reputation.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had met with Hamas leaders in the past, while current President Vladimir Putin has refrained from public personal contacts with Hamas representatives. However, various leaders of Hamas have visited Moscow multiple times, including meetings with Putin’s foreign policy advisor Yury Ushakov and other officials.

Russia has been accused of benefiting from the conflict in Israel involving Hamas terrorists, as it has diverted attention from the Ukraine war and influenced the reduction of military assistance to Ukraine. There are also reports that Russia has received delegations from Hamas multiple times after tragic events occurred in Israel involving Hamas terrorists. Additionally, Russia assisted in the release of Russian citizens held captive by the group.
