Russia names new Defense Minister as Shoigu moves to Security Council

Shoigu set to assume role as Secretary of Russia’s Security Council

The Federal Council of Russia has announced the appointment of Andrei Belousov as the Minister of Defense, replacing Sergei Shoigu in this role. Belousov, who previously served as First Deputy Prime Minister, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the position.

Shoigu has held the position of Minister of Defense since 2012 and has been involved in several high-profile conflicts during his tenure, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea, its involvement in conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and its deployment of peacekeeping troops to Nagorno Karabakh. He will now transition to become the Secretary of the Security Council, taking over from Nikolai Patrushev.
