Russia and Hamas: Moving Toward Peace in Gaza despite Challenges

Russian Foreign Ministry meets with Hamas representative to discuss “joint infrastructure projects”

Russia and Hamas met on June 24th to discuss the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israeli plans for annexation, and violations by Israel. The meeting, held in Moscow, involved discussions on political developments and efforts for unity in Palestine.

Russia reiterated its support for the Palestinian people and emphasized the need to end the conflict in Gaza. The parties also discussed bilateral and international issues, with a focus on infrastructure projects in transportation and energy sectors. Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing captivity of Russian citizens held by Hamas, expressing a desire for their release.

Despite Russia’s interactions with Hamas, progress has been made in addressing key issues. The release of Russian hostages remains unresolved, but former meetings between Russian officials and Hamas leadership have occurred without progress on hostage release. Although Russia does not label Hamas as a terrorist organization, it continues to advocate for the humanitarian needs of prisoners and highlighted the importance of ceasefire efforts.

The meeting with Abu Marzouk is part of ongoing contacts between Russia and Hamas aimed at promoting regional stability despite challenges in securing the release of Russian citizens held captive by Hamas.
