Cruise Ship Fire: A Close Call for Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas
Last week, the crew on board Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was faced with a small fire as the ship was berthed in a port in Mexico. The fire was quickly extinguished, and there were no injuries reported. The ship’s overall impact was minimal, according to a spokesperson from Royal Caribbean.
The Icon of the Seas, which is nearly 1,200 feet long and 250,800 gross tons, was docked in Costa Maya when the incident occurred. The vessel briefly lost power but back-up power was activated immediately. All crew members are trained to handle such situations and were able to control the blaze effectively.
Passengers were alerted about the incident through on-board announcements, and most reported only minor disruptions to their day. Social media users on an Icon of the Seas Facebook group mentioned that things quickly returned to normal after the fire was put out. The ship is now en route to Cozumel island in Mexico.
Despite this incident, Royal Caribbean has assured passengers that their safety remains its top priority and that its itinerary has not been impacted by the fire. This news comes after another cruise ship caught fire earlier this year on Carnival Cruise Lines – highlighting that minor fires are not uncommon on cruise ships but are usually managed swiftly with minimal disruption to passengers.
