In a post on his social media account, McIlroy congratulated DeChambeau but expressed his disappointment at missing crucial putts on the final day of the tournament. He described Sunday as one of the toughest days of his career, and acknowledged that he would need time to process the events of the past week.

McIlroy did not speak to the media after leaving Pinehurst before the trophy presentation. He admitted that the missed putts on the 16th and 18th holes would haunt him, according to six-time major winner Nick Faldo. Despite this setback, McIlroy is focusing on the positives of the week and remains confident in his abilities to win another major championship.

He described his career as resilient and emphasized his determination to bounce back from setbacks. McIlroy plans to take a few weeks away from the game to reflect and prepare for his upcoming tournaments, including the Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. The Scottish Open begins on July 11, followed by The Open the following week.
