Mental Health Impacted by Recent Flooding

The recent floods in southeastern KELOLAND have impacted communities in various ways, emotionally and physically. The cleanup process is not only exhausting but also takes a toll on the mental well-being of individuals affected by the floods.

In Rock Rapids, Corral Lanes, where people usually go bowling, is currently closed due to the flooding. Everything from the carpets to the lanes themselves may need to be replaced. Community member Wanda Huisman expressed her frustration at the situation, mentioning how insurance companies are not providing sufficient assistance and how 18 years of memories have gone down the drain.

The recent floods have caused both physical damage to properties and emotional damage to communities. Dr. David Ermer, MD, the clinical vice president of Avera Behavioral Health, explained that stressful events like this can lead to increased levels of stress, anxiety, helplessness, and loss of control. Despite these challenges, it is crucial to share feelings with friends and family members and seek professional help if needed. Wanda Huisman is trying to stay positive by focusing on the fact that lives were not lost during the floods and although it may take time and money to recover, it is essential to move forward and face each day courageously.
