Rock Island Public Library Launches Three-Year Initiative to Promote Mental Health Resources

Rock Island Public Library introduces new initiative focused on mental health

The Rock Island Public Library is set to launch a three-year initiative called “You Are Not Alone”, which aims to promote mental health resources in the community. Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), this project has been identified as a top priority for the use of funds following a community survey conducted in 2022.

The library will utilize the funding to enhance its programming by bringing in experts to discuss mental health issues and offer assistance to those in need. The promotional phase of the project has already begun, with the distribution of mental health resource cards containing important phone numbers and a QR code linking to more community resources. Visitors can also pick up “Stop the Stigma” wristbands, pins, and stickers.

Director Angela Campbell emphasizes the importance of having resources available for anyone who may need them, whether for themselves, a loved one, or a friend. She stresses that the library is more than just a place for books and that it focuses on building relationships and community. The additional programming funded by ARPA will target teens through adults, with a focus on tackling mental health topics and creating safe spaces for discussions.

In later phases of the project, the library hopes to continue receiving ARPA funding to support additional programming and events related to mental health. By highlighting the resources and services available, the library aims to encourage more people to utilize their services and seek help when needed.
