Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is leading the way in robotic surgery technology, being one of the first health systems globally and the only one in Pennsylvania to offer the latest in robotic surgery. The Da Vinci 5 surgical system is now available for various surgical procedures at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest in Allentown. This advanced system by Intuitive is designed to improve patient outcomes, efficiency, and insights, ultimately reducing the cost of care. Over a decade of research and development has gone into the Da Vinci 5 system, building upon the success of more than 14 million procedures performed using previous generations of Da Vinci technology.

The adoption of robotic surgery is not just about using advanced technology but about achieving better clinical outcomes and value. James Miller, president of LVHN’s Northampton region, emphasizes that this technology provides surgeons with enhanced sensory capabilities, improved visibility, and addresses surgeon ergonomics, ultimately leading to gentler surgery for patients. The system also includes force feedback technology, allowing surgeons to sense and measure the force exerted on tissue during procedures.

With 17 Da Vinci robotic surgical systems available across 15 specialties, the Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence is well-equipped to provide a wide range of robotic surgeries. Dr. Michael Pasquale, physician-in-chief at the Institute, points out that experience gained from performing a high volume of robotic surgeries results in better outcomes for patients, including less pain, reduced blood loss, and quicker recovery times.
