Rising Tides and Changing Currents: Meta’s High Median Salary and Efficiency Measures

The average annual salary for Meta employees is $379,000

Meta has released a recent SEC filing indicating that the median employee at the company earned over $379,000 in 2023. This figure is significantly higher than many tech jobs but on par with rivals such as Google and Amazon. Although Meta’s median salary is higher than the average tech position, it is not as high as other Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon, where positions regularly offer above $300,000 in compensation.

Despite the attractive compensation at Meta, the company is undergoing significant changes. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has implemented a “Year of Efficiency” to maximize productivity through performance reviews and layoffs, which is now a permanent state of affairs. The company has cut 22% of its staff since 2022, with no end in sight. Despite this, Meta reported strong earnings in its latest quarterly call. However, investors are concerned about the company’s plan to spend billions on AI technology.
