Rising Tensions in NYC over Modernizing Zoning Regulations

New York City is in the midst of modernizing its zoning regulations with the introduction of the “City of Yes” plan. However, the Bay Ridge Community Board has strongly opposed a specific aspect of the plan. This particular part focuses on zoning changes regarding business expansion, a move that has raised concerns among members of Brooklyn’s Community Board 10.

According to critics, the new rule in question goes too far in blending business and residential areas. Currently, zoning laws prevent new small stores from opening in residential neighborhoods, a restriction that would be lifted under the “City of Yes” plan. Additionally, the plan would also allow businesses with as few as three employees to operate out of residential properties.

One member of the Bay Ridge community board expressed unease about the proposal, fearing that once commercial businesses are allowed in residential areas, the trend will only continue to expand.
